Statement by His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia

Statement by His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia7th African Leadership Summit & Award for the conferment of the African Political Leader of the Year Award I AM GLAD TO HAVE BEEN INVITED HERE THIS EVENING. This event which was designed to help reconnect members of the African American community with their ancestral lineage in Africa is an event I take great pride in being associated with. I BRING GREETINGS FROM CONTINENT OF AFRICA AND FROM NAMIBIA, THE LAND OF THE BRAVE, FROM WHERE I HAIL.

It is a great honor to have been considered among many leaders to be awarded the African Political Leader of the Year Award. This 3 award is not given to individuals. Rather, it is given to all of those brave individuals who fought and sacrificed so much for the attainment of our Independence. It is an Africa which has risen and is on the march towards a better future. I am talking about people like Sam Nujoma, Hifikepunye Pohambaand other iconic leaders who paved the way for me to be able to be here and receive this award.

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A NECKLACE THAT ONE ADORNS HIMSELF WITH.YOU DO NOT SHOW-OFF LEADERSHIP 4 LIKE YOU DO WITH JEWELRY. Instead, leadership spells responsibility, accountability and transparency. The Africa of today is an Africa which is witnessing the rise of accountable leaders who embrace democracy. As Africans, we choose to embrace democracy not to please anyone outside the continent, but we chose democracy because it is good. Many suffered for it and were jailed for it, so we embrace it and adapt it to suit our needs as Africans. TODAY WE TALK OF NEW AFRICA. AN AFRICA WHICH IS ON THE MARCH.NEW AFRICA HAS MOVED ON FROM THE DAYS OF COUP D’√ČTATS. These incidents have been banished to the annals of history. There are also no more One Party States. We as Africans, as the African Union (AU), Southern African Development Community (SADC), Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) amongst others, have ostracized those who come to office through unlawful ways. This is a case of Africa managing its own affairs and letting the world know that we are a continent keen to 6 break away from past legacies and move towards an era of peace, stability and democratic rule. This is the New Africa of Electoral democracy. Electoral democracy is now the buzzword in Africa. However, electoral democracy is not an end unto itself but a means to an end.IT IS PERTINENT THAT WE BUTTRESS OUR DEMOCRACY BY ESTABLISHING, PROCESSES, SYSTEMS AND INSTITUTIONS. When I talk about processes I am referring mainly to electoral processes where Electoral Commissions need to be independent 7 and impartial, able to instill confidence in the ruling party and the opposition parties. Read More...
